HONEY: Not so good... Beware!
While honey is full of advantages and is of diverse health benefits which includes;
- Treatment of Cough, Hay-fever, Diarrhea,
- Treatment of Asthma
- Wound healing, burns and sunburn.
- It's a good source of carbohydrate
- It's a natural sweetener
- Used for fragrance and as a moisturizer in soap and cosmetic product.
- It helps in the removal of acne, reduces wrinkles and dryness.
- It equally plays a significant role in Weight loss.
Disadvantages of Honey
- Consumption of more than the daily limit of honey may interfere with nutrient absorption in the Gastrointestinal tract due to it's fructose content and this could result to abdominal upset and discomfort.
- Consuming excess honey may initiate long-term harmful effects on the gastrointestinal tract.
- Honey is quite acidic therefore it's prolonged usage may lead to acid reflux disease as a result of corrosion of the esophagus and gastrointestinal linings. It could also cause tooth decay.
- Honey is full of glucose, hence, taking excess of it may cause insulin insensitivity and glucose intolerance.
- Excessive consumption of honey can cause diarrhea, bloating, abdominal rumbling and cramps.
- When ingested by babies less than one year, it could cause Botulism, a paralytic disease. It doesn't affect adults but infants and this occurs due to the presence of the microorganism 'Clostridium botulinum' which is often found in honey.
